He was, in a way, destined to become a great poker player. He had a very high IQ and photographic memory, and he was a very good mathematician. But he also had some problems that would be his downfall in a very sad way.

He never had a normal job, but only won and lost money through gambling. Apart from poker, he did very well playing on horses, and playing gin rummy, backgammon and blackjack. The latter one he was so good at, that there were no casino to let him in after a while. He just won and won. Even though he was called “The kid”, he still had a talent that didn’t remind at all of a childs.
He had a son who committed suicide when he was in his teens, and Stu himself was only 45 at the time of his own death. He was a heavy drug addict, and when he died he left behind a daughter who was fifteen years old.

“The kid” was only twenty four when he entered the WSOP for the first time, and when he won many people and critics said that it was because of luck. He entered the year after, and just to prove them wrong, he won again. That is pretty exceptional. So yes, I think it is safe to say that he was one of the best poker players in the world – if not the best.

Bragging can be a strategy and if done the right way can really help. For bragging to be right or say acceptable in a poker game, it should be done with good purpose and intention. Bragging shouldn’t be done just for fun.

A brag that is not too loud to the ears and not too annoying is acceptable. It is the kind of bragging that helps and can earn some money. However, others still find this kind of bragging unethical. But still you can try making this but you must consider first the kind of players you are up against with.

Say you want to deceive your opponents. At some point, one of your opponents makes a bluff with ten-deuce and gets caught, but then gets lucky and able to catch running deuces to win. You can get in the way and brag and say lines like “yeah, I always play ten-deuce as I want to be like my favorite pro Doyle Brunson. If playing ten-deuce works for him then it will work for me too.” Your opponent then may go on tilt and you will have better winning chances. If he or she goes on tilt, he or she will become distracted and won’t be able to make good and sound decisions.

Well, so you can think right in early stage, try to relax first and clear your mind from any worries. Be calm and be open to all possibilities. Be comfortable and try to enjoy. Never ponder on things that are out of your control like luck. Then play tight. Being tight can really help on multiple levels. But of course, still have some control over your decisions. Although playing tight can help, it can also get you into some troubles so be careful.

To play tight means playing only premium hole cards with a goal to steal blinds and eventually even buy the pot.

In early stage, playing tight may help. But then on the flip side, never try to play aggressively or too excited. Never try to swipe blinds as it won’t help. Instead try to win big blinds. In the event the blinds are very small, never raise just to win little blinds. Never try to put your chips at risk for no good purpose. Try to be patient and wait for the blinds to improve before you try to take them away.

And in case you are up for small pots, try not to make aggressive bluffs. This won’t help most especially in early stage.

When in early stage, be careful when making decisions. You can play tight but you can’t be too excited. Playing tight may work but being too excited won’t work at all. As much as possible try to be tight but be reasonable and try to consider some factors. Try to consider the condition of the table and the kind of players you are up against with.

Play differently. Try not to play like the rest in the World Series of Poker Satellites. Play the other way around that is more into cashing. Knowing how to change gears can really help when you are up a steady table, changing stack sizes, lesser actions, and varying stages.

At times, a table will just go steady. Thus, whenever this situation pops up, try to apply your knowledge on how to change gears. Try to pull in some more chips. If you get lucky, you will collect a lot of chips later.

Also, sometimes, your stack size will change. It can get smaller or bigger. If in case it gets bigger, try to take advantage of this. You might later get an enormous stack that will help you in case you want to play in the final table.
