With a Pair of Two’s

Hello,

I was in a Pot Limit Holdem online the other day. Blinds then were $0.5/$1 and bets were $1/$2. At first, I was just observing but later I joined other players. Another guy joined in after me.

At certain point, I was dealt a pair of two’s and was UTG. I checked and then decided to fold in case someone raise. Following player placed $1 bet, everyone else called or checked. Then I raised to $10. Two others folded and everyone else then called, flop came and brought 2 5 T rainbow. Small and big blind then folded while I raised to $90. Four players then folded. Suddenly, three callers appeared. At such point, pot was $450. Turn came and brought Ad. I stopped for a while to think and then just decided to once again raise the bet to the size of the pot, $450. Two players folded while I called. River came and brought 7h. Once again I placed a bet while last player called. In the end, I won with a set.

Well, I know I should be happy but I don’t understand my feelings and my thinking. Why players back then are fond of calling? Maybe the reason has something to do with the time I joined the table, I joined quite late.

Any thoughts?

Best regards,
Zowe
Zowe,

Chances are players were overvaluing their pair’s. Also, it may have had something to do with the lateness of the day. Sometimes players will chase their losses later in the day and will call bets that they shouldn’t. You played the hand well. The only way you were losing is if someone had a pocket pair that connected with that board or if someone had 3-4. You would have been raised if either were the case. Nice hand sir.

Weak Tight and Rock

Hello,

What’s the difference between a weak tight player and a rock? Well to me they look similar. Your thoughts?

Thanks a ton!

Tom,

Weak tight players will sometimes make folds when certain scare cards hit the board, even if they have a hand. For instance, a weak tight player will fold a set to a potential straight or flush on board. A rock will still call this.

Rocks usually will raise their big hands and their hands on the flop if they are in the lead. Sometimes weak-tight players will play a little more passively. Weak-tight players may also check their big pocket pair preflop and then just check call bets, where rocks will at least make a raise.

One Person Always Wins

Hello,

I typically play with some close friends. I can’t believe it but there’s one person who always wins. Well, he does bluff some pots and gets others to fold but I don’t totally believe that these are the reasons why he always makes it.

Normally, when he’s in a hand in someone and he happens to ride it all the way to the river calling any bet, he then makes it to have a pair or a gunshot straight. Not to mention that whenever a certain player is in a pot with him and we finally turn over a pair each, I usually have a king kicker while he has an ace.

I remember one time in a 3 handed game, with QhJh I went all in. He called and flipped 8h7h over. Flop came up and was Q Q 6. Turn followed and was a 9. River then was next and brought 10, thus granting him a straight. In the end he made it again. I don’t understand why he’s always lucky and he’s always on top of the line.

Next time when he gets either a pocket pair or suited picture cards almost every hand, what should I do? I need your advice please.

Thank you.

Cade
Cade,

Your friend is riding a hot streak. You can either choose to play tighter against him, or choose to play small ball. A player such as this is a good one to play small ball with. See a lot of cheap flops and when your marginal hands connect big, then you punish him. Since he seems to be a bit of a calling station, you should be able to profit from him.

About Overcard on Flop

Category: Texas Holdem FAQ

Hello,

There’s a situation which tends to happen quite often. Please give me clarity on this.

In a $1-$2 No Limit game or at times Limit, I have a high pocket pair Js to Ks and then would raise preflop. Early position and I’ll get 2 or 3 callers. Flop would then came A-6-4 rainbow.

Then I would be the first to act and at least two players would be there behind me. Then I would assume that from the 2 or 3 callers, at least one would have an A and without knowing would then draw 2 outs.

If you were me, will you check or bet then? If in Limit, I would more or less place a bet for the information as for an instance in a $10-$20 game it will just take me $10 to get useful information regarding $60 or $80 pot and if there’d be a raise, I’ll be busted out. On the flip side if in Limit, I will most likely place a min size bet as if it’s a very small one I might just be raised and if a significant bet I might risk possible A.

Any thoughts?

Thanks and more power to you and your site!

All the best,
Alesser
Alesser,

I am going to bet out if I was the aggressor preflop, especially in Limit Holdem. If I am raised, then I will slow down. I will also bet out on the turn if I am just called on the flop in most cases, unless a tight player calls. In that case, I will check.

On Trips

Author: Texas Holdem

Hello,

For few weeks now, I’ve been playing $0.25/$0.50 No Limit. I don’t understand so many things but for now, I’ll just ask few questions.

About trips, how do you play them? Through playing trips, I won over lots of pots however also lost much. If you are in a situation where few people limp in and you have AT in late position, say you call and flop comes A-A-8 rainbow, how would you play then in case everyone checked to you or there’s a small or large raise alternatively?

Another thing, say in late position you have 87 and several players call and then you limp in too. Flop comes A-3-9 rainbow. First to act places a small raise, $1, while two players call and two others two fold. I then figure out I have 8 outs to make an open straight 6 or 10. Do you think this would be a bad play to pay the $1 to see the turn card hoping to have the straight completed on the river? Same thing if you had A5′s for an instance and one of the flop cards is of the same suit, do you think it’s a stupid thing to call a small raise hoping to hit four to a flush on the turn? Any thoughts?

Lee
Lee,

In the case there isn’t a flush or a straight draw on board, I am going to slow play my trips and let someone do the betting for me on the flop. If they don’t bet, then I will tend lead out on the turn and probably pick up the pot. Now if the turn doesn’t improve the board, I may again slow play. If I bet out on either the flop or the turn and face a raise, I am raising back as the only thing that is beating me is a pocket pair that has hit a boat or someone with a better ace. If that happens, it happens, but I am playing my set aggressively.

Playing High Ace

Author: Texas Holdem
Category: Texas Holdem FAQ

Hello,

Honestly, I’m having problems about reading other players and being dealt high ace like AQ or AK.

At times, when I’m dealt high ace like AQ or AK, somebody will either place a big bet on me or re-raise me and then I’ll place him on a big ace. One time there was one guy who possibly had any kind of straight draw and so I placed a huge bet. I then thought that oftentimes if in case I see a re-raise, I’ll lay down as he might have some kind of pocket pair however if he calls, it could possibly be flush draw. Turn and river then came followed by some betting rounds. Later, he showed set of 7′s or 10′s, while I either had a pair or something else.

Any thoughts? Do you think I’m just being completely blindsided or there’s actually something I need to look for?

Thanks in advance!

Dennis
Dennis,

You are being overly aggressive with Ace high. When you are bet into or reraised, you need to do better than put them on ace high. It is time to let that hand go. Yes, some maniac players may make a bet or a raise into you with nothing, but you need to be able to identify your players better and put your players on hands properly. If you have A-K and face major resistance, in most cases it is time to fold.
